June 17, day 10
Today was the 1st day teaching at Mosi-Oa-Tunya high school in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Instead of teaching 2 sessions a day for 3 days, we'll be teaching 3 sessions a day for 2 days. We're also teaching 2 different sets of students too! This school is a little bit bigger & cleaner than the last school in South Africa. The students are very disciplined & quiet. They did participate well but they aren't as enthusiastic & their personalities are much different than the class in South Africa. We met the other 2 team members today too, Pastor Cyprian & Aubrio. Both of them seem very nice & they should be a great addition to the Smart Choices team. Pastor Cyprian's church actually meets @ this high school & Aubrio is a student at the high school too. 2 great connections to keep the program at the high school for years to come.
Julie & I talked to the same lady @ the grocery store after school was over. It turns out that the lady is HIV positive & her son has left & won't come back to take care of her. Unfortunately I didn't a picture shaking the lady's hand or maybe even hugging her. It would have been a great example for the kids to see the teachers hugging or shaking hands with a person with HIV as a reminder that you can't get HIV unless body fluids are exchanged. The story of her being alone would have been a perfect example for the students as it relates to the opening activity of the program.
Pastor Vu & I had a long & great conversation about church, Jesus, preaching God's word & life in general. I even had a chance to give a 5 min testimony on how I accept Jesus. He's a great guy that loves being able to teach God's word to people. Even though we're 14,000 miles apart, some of the struggles in his church are not much different than the ones in Ca.
I finished out the night being able to text on Viber with my wife. I miss her a lot & I look forward to being with her soon!
